Are there Elaine? I see you live in or near one of the fire area. I do too. Are you safe? Can you breath? I can't breath outside. And the sky is the eeriest color... the moon tonight is golden through the smoke, not blue.

Actually yes. I live near Irvine... and now the fire have spread into foothill ranch area.

I could see the glow of the fire right now from my back yard. It's quite saddening... 10+
homes near that area have burned down. Oh oh! and I can see the news helicopter flying around above
my house... at least 4 of them are up there... O_O!

My car has ashes all over it... :x... I went to eat at ruth's chris ( a restaurant
that serve really yummy steak ) about 2 days ago in Irvine and omg... I can't
even breathe!

Here is a picture of how it looked like earlier today... taken from my backyard!

It's not too bad though right now. The air smells all right if I go outside.

Because its not bad until the sky literally turns black. Grey smoke is a sign of a fire burning, black smoke is the sign of a active fire on the move. And the pic she's posted looks like there's plenty of time.

(oh btw, the forest fire in the charr lands is rather realistic, if anyone wants to know what an actual one looks like)

*edit: damn, that sounded rather cold.. I really hope you guys aren't affected by the fires and if it comes down to it, that you get out in time and after find out your houses still stand.

Missed the thread til now.. lol I'm a slacker on GWN

Anyhow.. I usually don't have problems making friends or at least decent acquaintances ingame. Usually happens when my regular playing partners aren't on and I get bored..lol

OP.. or anyone else for that matter... feel free to add me to your friends list. You can use Corwin Andros for that although I don't actually play him much anymore.

Got all 3 chapters and GW:EN and am usually on later at night during the mid week and most any time on Mon and Wed, and early on weekends.. Eastern time.. I work a weird schedule..lol

My main character is a mes and has finished Prophecies, Factions, GW:EN, and all but the last few missions in NF. Have one of each class, but my sin, rit, and paragon all are less than level 20. But I'll be more than happy to group up with anyone interested.

There's an assumption here that it's easy to make friends in real life.
Or possibly, that it should be easier to make friends in-game than in real life.

Sorry honey, it just doesn't work that way.

Friends are a two-way street. There are too many people around now who are just in it for the "me" and probably have been always, judging by the sayings and proverbs about friends.

Take a look at the D&D morality system. "Good" people are those who do things for the good of others, "Evil" people are those who are in it for themselves. And it's pretty much a me-first world out there.

It would be nice if GW incorporated a morality system in its plots. It would serve as a reminder.

I hero/hench everything, don't talk much in the guild, and don't PvP. Hence I don't talk to people at all. I'm not saying I have trouble, I just don't want to. Socialising is for RL, gaming is for games.

Bushfires are rather common in Aus, so full scale evacuations aren't raised until things become as bad as lg5000 mentioned. Even then, there are people who, having lived for many years in the area, refuse to leave their houses.

Erk, I remember seeing a nasty documentary on what would happen if there was a firestorm in Sydney. :x

For the record, don't ever, ever get a significant other into Guild Wars for the sake of having friends. I've had to pull the plug on the laptop one too many times, just so my boyfriend would sleep. >_>

The area I live in has no real experience with large fires (East Tennessee) and yet, a few years ago we had some. I felt uneasy when there is ash falling from the sky and looks like a light snow and you can't even smell dinner being cooked for the smoke (NOT normal and something no one I knew had *ever* experienced). But then, being a human that is capable of thinking I know that something 20-30 miles away burning isn't my house. I rather suspect that the same thing goes on there.

Now, if the picture clearly showed flames I would quite likely agree - however that wasn't even anywhere near close to what we saw here and there was never any danger of the fire. We watched the news and kept tract of where it was - no big deal unless you were close to it. For areas that these are not really unheard of I rather suspect they have a better system than we had in place.

If the 2001 firestorm that hit Canberra hit Sydney.. oh dear.. we got lucky and only lost 4 lives and 500 houses despite the government screw up of giving the evac notice about 20 mins after most people started to evacuate on their own due to the fire having reached the houses and the interstate problem of the ACT being stupid and not letting the NSW firefighters help straight away.

But yeah, go have a look at the Charr territory fire (the one with the ele boss)...

Interjection.
D&D's "morality" system is... to put it lightly... messed up. It fully justifies Paladin sorts (Lawful Good) killing "evil" creatures (e.g. goblins) JUST because they're "evil". Honestly speaking, that is one of the biggest screw-ups that any such system can have. I mean... it isn't as totally messed up as Fable's "morality" system, but still.
And Guild Wars certainly doesn't need any such thing. It doesn't need some upstart Robert Kuisis PhD in the credits as a Psychological Consultant to ensure that the game sets a wholesome and moral example...

All it needs is for individual people to do their best to set an example and live by that example, irrespective of what their peers may be doing.

Oh.... and while we're at it... why the heck has this thread gone so woefully off-topic? Someone might have cast Searing Flames on California... but I fail to see what that has to do with anything.

/Lockdown.

Answer: Find common ground.

For example, a guy I met a long time ago was on my friends list back when GW was just Prophecies - I took a break for a year, came back, looked at my friends list and saw he was online. Started the convo with "OMG WTF H4X??!" and he soon followed suit... :P

We then started playing together, and whilst talking, I realised he went to the school ADJACENT to the school I'd JUST left... which was albeit, awkward. We then started talking over skype and we're playing through the game and doing dungeons etc together, it's really quite fun...

But I'm looking for new people to add to my friends list, yeah. :P I think being a good leader in PuG's works well in harder areas like UW and FoW, and of course, being friendly in AC.

Pulling this topic back on topic.

You leave a thread alone for a day or two and it multiplies in pages whilst your gone. Lots been said, not much that has not been said. Anyway my take on what has been said. Most people find e-friends from simple interaction through the game, pugging, HAing etc. Mainly it is that common thing that normally causes you two to meet and be friends. The pug is a mixed blessing. It is in general terribly ineffective at getting things done as most people do not want to listen, co-ordinate etc. Things that you can do alright with heros and even better with one friend. On the other hand by pugging you find people with interests with you making the game more fun. Anyway is some advice for making friends in a pug.
1) If you are going to lead a group, know for the most part what you are doing. Nothing more sucks than joining a group of someone who wants to do something who just accepts anyone and you end up with a group of something like :1 assassin, 4 warriors, 1 dervish, 1 necro and a monk in an elite area (that and the person leading has no idea how to balance the team for sucess).
2) If you do not know how to lead, join a team and take note of what those people bring, what worked well what did not. Simply observe, and listen. Listening is the key thing.
3) Ask questions if you do not know something. If people are using terms you do not understand, ask them what it means. If you listen and ask questions you have then odds are you will play much better than the average pug thus allowing the chance for the person to want to group with you again.
4) If you have fun with a group of people, or specificlly one person ask if you may add them to your friends list. Normally people will say yes. Out of common curtesy it is a good idea not to pm them to help you get through missions etc unless you happen to know them fairly well. More along the lines as "Hi, do you have any characters that need to do (insert mission quest here)" or "Hi, do you want to do (insert area here like FoW, UW, Urgoz etc)." I do not know, but it is my notion that asking people to redo things they do not need is a bit annoying if they do not really need it. I have no qualms helping my friends out through missions, however, I do hope they do not rely on me to beat the entire game.
5) keep in contact, I have lost a few friends cause we only talk ingame and they just vanish or forget who they are.

Anyway my bent on things.
I soloed through most the game for a few months, got really really boring. Met some friends chilled with their guild and did a whole bunch of areas with them and it really put new life into the game. So the social aspect can add a lot to the game.
Try to be able to do things yourself, it is alright to need help once in a while. That and if you are able to hench most things when you redo it on other characters if your friends are busy you can just continue on with your thing and not be held up by them.
If you find a good player and are a bit green yourself ask if you can quest with them and etc. Say hello to them sociallize etc. You can learn a lot from experianced players. I know I have in my time, and hopefully I have taught a few fledglings myself.

That is all I got time for now. Hope this vents the thread back on topic.

My later experience in GW was very ugly, filled with lots of nasty guild drama and what not.

However, like Spazzer has said, online Guild Wars communities are a great way to meet people. Just check out the Guild forum to meet the nicer people.

I agree I have met and enjoyed playing with a few people from guru here. If you like you can add me up and I'll play with you and hang out. Add both names over there to your f-list and you'll have both my accounts added. See you around.

Maybe we should organize an in-game area meet for everyone who is spending their so cal days sucking down the dirty air. The Santiago fire was just across the street from my company's office building and fires still burn down the road. The interior still reeks of smoke and ash falls from the sky like snowflakes. It would almost be pretty if the air didn't hang so thickly. Makes for a rather miserable work environment.

Kind of reminds me of the area that Borrguus Blisterbark calls home... The ash mixed with a little water is corrosive, so if you do wash your car, make sure it's thoroughly clean and dry.

Most of my in-game friends are older than I am, in some cases by quite a few years. And generally younger in-game friends have a level of maturity to temper their youthful enthusiasm and capriciousness.
